What is Albedo?

Albedo is a scientific term that refers to the amount of solar radiation that a surface reflects. Light-colored surfaces, such as snow and ice, have the highest albedo because they reflect the most sunlight and energy back to space. Alternatively, darker surfaces, such as asphalt and densely-wooded land, have a lower albedo as they absorb the majority of the sunlight and energy emitted towards them. This concept follows the same reasoning that a black shirt on a sunny day will make you hot!

With global temperatures increasing, snow and ice around the planet is melting, which means less energy is reflected back to space and more is being absorbed by the Earth, causing more warming. This cycle is called the Ice-Albedo Feedback Loop and is one of the driving forces in increasing global temperatures and climate changes.

We have named our organization, Albedo Climate Solutions, after this term because we hope to guide people to reflect on their part in the climate crisis and take action towards increasing our planet’s reflectivity and reducing global temperatures!
